Content & Visual Systems Designer

Digital Media · Visual Knowledge · AI-Assisted Production

Remote · Project-based collaboration

Help build the visual and digital systems through which ideas become public knowledge.

Cognitra Group is looking for a multidisciplinary Content & Visual Systems Designer to help translate research, frameworks and structured ideas into clear, rigorous and engaging visual and digital formats.

The role sits at the intersection of visual communication, digital media production, knowledge design and emerging AI-assisted creative workflows.

About Cognitra Group

Cognitra Group is an applied think tank and knowledge institution working at the intersection of research, strategy, knowledge systems, institutional communication and visual knowledge production.

We develop frameworks, structured knowledge, and public-facing intellectual work to make complex ideas clearer, more usable, and more accessible across formats and audiences.

As our digital and media capabilities expand, we are building the production systems needed to translate this work into high-quality visual, audiovisual and interactive forms.

The Role

This is not a conventional graphic-design or social-media production role. We are looking for someone who can work across visual systems, knowledge communication and digital production—moving between structured source material and finished public-facing outputs.

You will work with research, frameworks, diagrams, presentations, publications, and media concepts, helping determine how to translate each into the format that communicates it most effectively.

Some assignments will require established design and production methods. Others will involve experimentation with emerging tools and AI-assisted workflows across image, video, audio and digital media.

The objective is not content for content’s sake. It is to build clear, credible and reusable systems for communicating knowledge.

What You Will Work On

Your work may span several connected areas. The exact mix will vary by project, but the role is expected to contribute across the following production environment:

  • Visual knowledge systems — translating research, frameworks and structured ideas into diagrams, visual models, presentations and other clear explanatory formats.

  • Digital and editorial design — developing publication-ready assets for websites, reports, social platforms and other institutional channels.

  • Video and audiovisual production — supporting the development of short- and long-form media from concept and visual direction through production and post-production.

  • AI-assisted creative production — exploring appropriate uses of emerging tools across image, video, audio and other media workflows while maintaining human creative direction and quality control.

  • Reusable production systems — creating templates, component libraries and repeatable workflows that improve consistency without making the work formulaic.

  • Cross-format adaptation — adapting source material intelligently across formats and audiences while preserving its underlying meaning and intellectual integrity.

Core Responsibilities

  • Develop visual systems, diagrams, layouts and knowledge assets from structured research and source material.

  • Design and prepare digital assets for websites, publications, presentations and social platforms.

  • Support audiovisual projects through visual development, asset preparation, editing, post-production and format adaptation.

  • Work with AI-assisted creative and production tools where they provide a meaningful improvement in quality, capability or workflow.

  • Help develop and refine workflows for emerging forms of digital and presenter-led media.

  • Maintain consistency across templates, visual components and recurring production formats.

  • Prepare assets accurately for different platforms, dimensions, resolutions and delivery requirements.

  • Organise working files, source assets, versions and production outputs so that work remains traceable and reusable.

  • Collaborate closely with Cognitra Group on interpretation, iteration and quality control rather than treating briefs as purely mechanical production instructions.

  • Protect confidential materials, unpublished intellectual assets and restricted production resources encountered through the work.

What We’re Looking For

We are less interested in a narrow job-title match than in the combination of capabilities you can bring to the work. You may come from visual design, digital media, motion, audiovisual production, knowledge communication or a related field.

  • Strong visual judgement and the ability to turn structured or information-dense material into clear, coherent visual communication.

  • Demonstrated capability with professional design and production tools relevant to visual, digital and/or audiovisual work.

  • Experience developing assets for more than one format or channel rather than designing for a single medium only.

  • An understanding of typography, hierarchy, composition, layout and visual systems—not simply proficiency with software.

  • The ability to work with diagrams, frameworks, research material and abstract concepts without reducing them to superficial graphics.

  • Practical familiarity with video, motion or audiovisual workflows, whether as a primary specialism or as part of a broader production skill set.

  • Curiosity about emerging AI-assisted creative tools and the judgement to distinguish useful capabilities from novelty.

  • Strong file organisation, version discipline and attention to production detail.

  • Comfort working independently within a remote, iterative collaboration environment.

  • Professional discretion when working with unpublished materials, restricted assets and evolving production systems.

Particularly Valuable

You do not need to bring every capability below. Experience in one or more of these areas would, however, be particularly valuable:

  • Motion design, animation or advanced video editing.

  • Data visualisation or information design.

  • Editorial, publication or presentation-system design.

  • Experience translating research, policy, academic or other knowledge-intensive material for wider audiences.

  • Experience with AI-assisted image, video, voice, audio or post-production workflows.

  • Familiarity with emerging forms of synthetic, virtual or presenter-led media production.

  • Experience developing reusable design systems, templates or component libraries.

  • Familiarity with accessibility considerations in digital and visual communication.

  • Experience working across multiple platforms while preserving a coherent visual and editorial identity.

How We Work

Cognitra Group works remotely and collaborates across disciplines, projects and locations. This role is structured around thoughtful execution, clear communication and iterative development rather than high-volume production.

  • Remote collaboration — the work is designed to be carried out remotely, with coordination through agreed digital tools and workflows.

  • Project-based engagement — collaboration will initially be organised around defined projects, deliverables and production needs.

  • Iterative development — work may move through several rounds of interpretation, testing and refinement before it is considered complete.

  • Direct collaboration — you should be comfortable discussing choices, asking questions and explaining design or production decisions rather than simply receiving instructions.

  • Quality over volume — speed matters when required, but not at the expense of clarity, accuracy or production quality.

  • Structured experimentation — emerging tools and methods may be tested where they create genuine value, but experimentation remains subject to judgement, review and quality control.

Engagement

This opportunity is structured initially as a remote, project-based collaboration. Scope, timelines and deliverables will be defined according to the requirements of each assignment.

We are interested in building a reliable working relationship with someone who can become increasingly familiar with Cognitra Group’s visual systems, production standards and ways of working over time.

The right collaboration may develop beyond individual assignments as Cognitra Group’s visual and digital production capabilities grow.

Application Process

Please submit your curriculum vitae together with a brief introduction explaining your background, the capabilities you would bring to this role, and why the opportunity interests you.

A portfolio or selected examples of relevant work are required. Please include work that helps us understand not only your visual or technical capabilities, but also how you approach structure, communication and production across different formats.

Where relevant, we particularly welcome examples involving visual systems, diagrams or information design, editorial or digital design, audiovisual production, motion, AI-assisted creative workflows, or other forms of knowledge-focused media.

Your portfolio does not need to demonstrate every capability described in this vacancy. We are interested in the quality of your work, the thinking behind it, and the relevance of your experience to the role.

What Happens Next

Applications will be reviewed carefully, with particular attention to the relevance and quality of submitted work, multidisciplinary capability, and the candidate’s approach to visual and digital production.

Candidates whose experience and approach align with the role may be invited to an initial conversation to discuss their work, creative and production process, and potential fit with Cognitra Group.

Shortlisted candidates may subsequently be invited to discuss selected portfolio work in greater depth or complete a focused practical exercise relevant to the role.
